October 31, 2023

At the mention of the Mediterranean, what comes to mind? Postcard-worthy images of gorgeous blue ocean waters, sandy beaches, cloudless blue skies…and food? Yes, food! Johnson Chiropractic presents nutrition tips, and the Mediterranean diet is bantered around the world of nutrition for its many health benefits as well it should in our chiropractic world, too. Fish, fruits, and veggies are healthy for all of us in this Richmond chiropractic family!

BENEFITS OF MEDITERRANEAN DIET

With the growing recognition that diet offers a beneficial role in health and prevention of disease issues like osteoporosis, bone loss, etc., guidelines are being developed. A new paper with suggestions for guidelines endorsed a mediterranean-type diet with daily consumption of 2 to 3 dairy products to deliver calcium and protein sufficient enough to preserve normal calcium-phosphorous balance and bone metabolism all of which are related to a decreased risk of fracture. (1) In other studies, the Mediterranean diet has been described as reducing hip fracture risk. Another new paper explains that there is evidence that a modified or alternative Mediterranean diet like the DASH (“Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension”) diet may also lower hip fracture risk as well as threat of lumbar spine osteoporosis in women. (2) A study just released this past month pointed out that older adults who adhered the Meditterranean Diet more strictly had lower odds of developing cognitive decline. (3) Better BMD, lower osteoporosis odds, reduced risk of cognitive decline and hip fracture may be inspiring to try and follow the Mediterranean diet, yes? Johnson Chiropractic finds these new studies interesting enough to share with our Richmond chiropractic patients and their families.

WHAT DO I EAT ON THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET?

Good stuff! Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, healthy fats (olive oil, nuts, seeds), yogurt, seafood/fish, a little red wine, and lots of water, un-sugared sparkling water, juices. It suggests staying away from sugars, refined grains, ultra-processed foods, etc. (4) These are all possible if not easy!
