Neck Pain Relief That Starts Beyond Your Neck

October 13, 2026

If you've lived with neck pain for many months, you've most likely tried stretching it, massaging it, and resting it. But here's a point that may come as a surprise: some of the most effective exercises for a sore neck target its neighboring areas instead. Your neck functions as part of a partnership that includes your jaw above and your upper back below, and two new studies published in 2026 show why that teamwork matters.

YOUR JAW HAS A SAY

Researchers tracked 62 adults who had dealt with neck pain for more than three months. (1) Everyone performed neck stabilization exercises for six weeks, and half also added Rocabado exercises, a short series of easy movements for the jaw, tongue, and head posture. Both groups got better. The group that added jaw exercises, on the other hand, experienced bigger gains in how much pressure their neck could handle before pain set in, in their sense of where their head was positioned, and in their balance. Given that the jaw and neck share muscles and nerve pathways, it makes sense that caring for one can support the other.

YOUR UPPER BACK LENDS A HAND

A second clinical trial of 54 adults introduced thoracic (mid- and upper-back) mobility exercises to standard neck exercises. (2) The added routine didn't ease pain more than neck exercises alone, but it did lead to better posture, spinal mobility, neck-related function, and use of the arms and shoulders. A stiff upper back can leave your neck carrying an extra load, so loosening it might help everything above move more easily.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU

These were modest, short-term studies, and in each case, the extra exercises were added to neck exercises rather than taking the place of them. Still, they're a good reminder that the source of your pain and the route to comfort aren't always in the same spot.
