Richmond Chiropractic Nutrition Tip: Quercetin for Inflammatory, Metabolic and Autoimmune Issues

September 28, 2021

Quercetin. How many Q-starting vitamins or minerals come to mind for you? Well, this is a good one! A yellow pigment in plants used as a food supplement to decrease allergic responses or boost immunity, quercetin is demonstrating itself to do more than just that! Its anti-inflammatory, immune-system supporting, and gut microbiota-regulating features to name a few are getting the attention of Johnson Chiropractic. We feel that our Richmond chiropractic patients will value this vitamin flavonoid even more!

INFLAMMATION

Quercetin as a flavonoid found in herbs, fruits (apples, berries), onions, seeds, nuts, and green tea is explained as offering positive effects on human health by mediating antioxidant activities, immune-modulatory effects, and regulating metabolic pathways.  By what means? By modifying gene expression, signaling pathways and controlling proteins and cytokines. Quercetin is supposed to most likely affect the P12K/AKT pathway and benefit neurodegenerative disorders, liver diseases, and diabetes. (1) Quercetin has been demonstrated to reduce the neuralgia and the inflammatory response of the sciatic nerve and spinal dorsal horn in rats with chronic constriction injury. (2) Johnson Chiropractic respects anti-inflammatory responses when it comes to containing pain!

AUTOIMMUNE DISEASE

Quercetin’s reputation is maturing a lot! Its utilization in treating and potentially preventing autoimmune diseases which appear resulting from a breakdown and dysregulation of the immune system is being examined. Dietary supplementation is being implemented increasingly due to positive effects, relative safety, and minimal cost. Quercetin stands out in this realm due to its anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation, and neuroprotective benefits. Studies of late described positive effects of quercetin on rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease, multiple sclerosis, and lupus. (3) Richmond chiropractic patients with autoimmune disease may want to consider whether quercetin may be helpful.

METABOLIC DISEASE

Quercetin is also standing out in treatment of metabolic diseases like diabetes, hyperlipedemia, and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Richmond chiropractic patients experience these types of issues, too. Animal experiments reported that quercetin promoted insulin secretion, enhanced insulin resistance, reduced blood lipid levels, restrained inflammation and oxidative stress, alleviated hepatic lipid accumulation, and synchronized gut microbiota. Future human studies are dreamt of to discover a way to increase the bioavailability of quercetin as well as record its efficacy. (4) Johnson Chiropractic incorporates nutritional supports like quercetin with its chiropractic spinal manipulation via Cox® Technic to assist our Richmond chiropractic patients find pain relief and enjoy better health.
