Headaches and migraines are unwelcome visitors. Headache sufferers are usually very ready for tips on how to avoid them. Migraine (a primary
headache) sufferers over the age of 50 find themselves members of a global
community with migraine as a leading cause of
disability. (1) Johnson Chiropractic has
some prevention tips and treatment relief suggestions just
for our Richmond headache and migraine sufferers.
DIET AND WEIGHT
A healthy diet feeds the body and the mind. Researchers
have noticed that migraine triggers appear
in many different forms - environmental, hormonal, and dietary.
A high-quality diet successfully helps manage
migraine. Additionally, and more expressly, women
with chronic migraine ate a poorer quality diet than that of women with episodic
migraine. (2) A new study got
even more specific with the type of diet helpful to
migraine patients, particularly overweight folks. A very low-calorie ketogenic diet was found
to be preventive of episodic migraines. Effectiveness
was noted within one month of the diet modification.
(3) Johnson Chiropractic is not urging that any
of our patients start a specific
diet now! If a Richmond headache sufferer chooses
to try a new diet, Johnson Chiropractic is here to discuss
and decide which diet (if any special one) is proper.
NUTRITION: Vitamin D
In much the same
way, vitamin D supplementation is presented. Vitamin D deficiency has been reported
in 45% to 100% of migraine sufferers. The anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics
of vitamin D have opened its supplementation to considered inclusion in the care and prevention of headache and migraine.
One study reported that trial doses of 1000-4000 IU per day decreased
the frequency of migraine in addition to routine drug
therapy. More study needs to be done,
but vitamin D supplementation seems encouraging.
(1) Johnson Chiropractic studies the nutrition of each
individual Richmond chiropractic patient and suggests
supplementation when applicable.
CHIROPRACTIC AND INTEGRATIVE CARE
Headaches of all types – primary
headaches like migraine and tension-type headache – are common
complaints brought to the Richmond chiropractor. Research reported
that complementary and integrative medicine - nutrition, movement (yoga),
manual therapy, traditional Chinese medicine, acupuncture, massage,
biofeedback, meditation, and mind-body strategies – was beneficial.
In particular, spinal manipulation, chiropractic care,
some supplements, diet change and hydrotherapy are reported beneficial
for migraine headache. (4)
