Richmond Knee Osteoarthritis and Quality of Life with a Mediterranean Diet

January 08, 2019

What do stiff, popping, cracking knees and olive oil, fruits, veggies and red wine have in common? Knee osteoarthritis! Richmond knee pain sufferers undergo the morning routine with “bad” knees, the stiffness and pain that comes with waking up and moving. Johnson Chiropractic hears our Richmond chiropractic patients describe this all the time. Those Richmond knee pain sufferers would be grateful for some relief. What’s one approach? The Mediterranean diet that requires, of all things, eating. Johnson Chiropractic wonders “How hard can eating be for Richmond knee pain relief?”

Richmond OSTEOARTHRITIS SUFFERERS AND THEIR PAIN

Richmond knee osteoarthritis is ordinary. There are numerous Richmond knee pain sufferers. They’re not alone! 240 million people around the globe live with osteoarthritis. That affects about 10% of men and 18% of women. (1) Any Richmond knee osteoarthritis sufferer recognizes the knee pain, the morning stiffness, and the creaky joint motion that lowers the enjoyment of daily life. (1) It’s just not very fun. Now a Mediterranean diet has potential to be fun though!

WHAT TO EAT ON A MEDITERRANEAN DIET

The Mediterranean diet incorporates lots of fruits and vegetable, legumes and nuts, cereals and seeds, seafood and fish. The Mediterranean diet allows for moderate intake of dairy, poultry and eggs in addition to red wine and olive oil as the chief source of dietary lipids. (1) Yum! Eating a Mediterranean diet can be very delicious and adventurous for a new Mediterranean diet adherent.

BENEFITS OF THE MEDITERRANEAN DIET

Knee osteoarthritis involves inflammation in addition to pain. An analysis of three studies highlights that biomarkers of inflammation and cartilage degradation due to osteoarthritis decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (1) Particularly, the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-1α decreased in the Mediterranean diet group. (2) Knee osteoarthritis patients who better followed a Mediterranean diet show a lessened risk of deteriorating knee pain at four years follow up. For those who did not have knee osteoarthritis at the beginning of the 4 years study and followed a Mediterranean diet, a 9% reduced risk of getting knee osteoarthritis was reported. (3) Overall, a higher adherence to a Mediterranean diet is associated with improved quality of life and decreased pain, disability and depressive symptoms. (4)
