March 29, 2022

Work. We all must do it. Everyone’s job requires posture(s) that may elicit pain at one point or another. Johnson Chiropractic sees the pain! Quite a few Richmond back pain and neck pain patients who seek chiropractic share stories of work-related pain. We can help!

TREATING AND PREVENTING WORKPLACE MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN

Johnson Chiropractic is confident in its skill to alleviate and handle work-related musculoskeletal pain for our Richmond chiropractic patients. Not too startling, 81.7% of office workers in one study experienced musculoskeletal pain in at least one area. Back pain was the most often experienced pain for 54.8%. Neck and shoulder pain were after that. Curiously, musculoskeletal system pain was seen as high in office workers whose physical activity levels were reported as low. 58.5% of these workers reported being “active” physically, 37.3% were less active, 4.1% were very active. (1) Research shows that in-the-workplace exercise interventions were effective in treating musculoskeletal disorders and in reducing pain for office workers. (2) Johnson Chiropractic appreciates the optimism this brings for our Richmond back and neck pain patients!

WHAT EXERCISE INTERVENTIONS WORK?

Johnson Chiropractic treats work-related pain according to the guidelines of The Cox® Technic System of Spinal Pain Management which incorporates gentle spinal manipulation alongside exercise, nutrition and other recommendations.  We see the value in researchers’ description of work-related musculoskeletal pain disorders as those painful conditions induced by too little utilization of the musculoskeletal system throughout the work day. Exercise, education, ergonomic direction, massage are pretty usual methods of managing and attempting to prevent pain. Most recommendations like this were for workers to do outside of the workplace. Recently, researchers proposed the value of specific, individualized, resistance strengthening exercises in the workplace to decrease pain, fatigue, and discomfort in worker’s upper extremities and neck. (3) That is a promising idea. Johnson Chiropractic sees the value in taking care of oneself at home as well as in the workplace!
