EXERCISE FOR RELIEF OF THE BURDEN OF LOW BACK PAIN

Low back pain is a burden for the low back pain sufferer, the family, the community, and the healthcare system. Healthcare providers and researchers analyze proposed long-term ways to decrease this problem for whose sufferers’ disability continues. Exercise leads the list of non-invasive, non-drug general recommendations along with manual therapy and massage. (1) Johnson Chiropractic offers itself as the Richmond back pain specialty clinic to which many back pain sufferers see.

BACK PAIN SPECIALIST’S PLAN FOR BACK PAIN RELIEF ADDS EXERCISE

Many chronic back pain sufferers visit their primary care practitioners first. it is a pretty standard routing. Primary care recommendations for chronic low back pain care typically involve exercise, oral prescriptions of NSAIDs and SNRI’s like duloxetine. In research, there is a curious statistic called “number to treat” which denotes the number of patients with a certain condition who need to go through the treatment recommendation for 1 of the treatment recipients to report benefit. In this recent study, the number to treat for 1 chronic low back pain patient to report benefit from exercise was 7, from NSAIDs 6, and SNRIs 10. Of these three options, exercise was the only intervention that demonstrated continued chronic low back pain relief after the intervention ended and up to 48 weeks later. (2) Exercise is a valuable, self-management, non-drug alternative for chronic low back pain patients. Johnson Chiropractic always includes it in the Richmond chiropractic treatment plan. Exercise puts some control of chronic low back pain in our Richmond chiropractic patients’ hands.

WHAT ABOUT SLEEP AND EXERCISE?

Another beneficial patient-controlled option is sleep-and-exercise. Lack of sleep – time and/or quality – is an issue for so many Richmond chiropractic patients. Johnson Chiropractic often hears our patients bring up sleep difficulties. Sleep is rejuvenating for the body and the mind. Exercise is manytimes prescribed to address sleep and mood issues. A noteworthy study about the relationship between sleep and exercise highlights some interesting findings in young women and men. Each is different! Men who exercised more often reported falling asleep faster, less daytime trouble, and less depressive mood. Women who exercised more often went to bed earlier, had improved sleep quality, and reported more benefit from sleep, less depressive mood, and less anger. (3) Regular exercise is important for so many concerns!
